A large late Regency mahogany partner’s library table attributed to Gillows

About the Item

A large late Regency mahogany partner’s library table attributed to Gillows, the leather inset rectangular top above six frieze drawers, the frieze cross banded, raised on powerful double scroll legs carved with acanthus leaves, the gadrooned pad feet disguising the original brass castors. English, circa 1815. Footnote: This table is typical of the bold ‘neo-baroque’, or rococo revival style, first promoted and thereafter rapidly popularised in England by the Gillows firm during the latter half of the 1820s. The design for this particular model appears in a drawing of a library layout (or room plan) executed by Gillows, possibly in conjunction with Ferguson and Co., upon behalf of J. Pultenay Esq. in circa 1829. It is illustrated in S.E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol. II, 2008, Woodbridge, pl. E4, pp.’s 348-349, and is housed at Lancaster City Museums, LM 55.20/33. A mahogany library table attributed to Gillows, likewise dated circa 1830, which is virtually identical to the present example, was sold at Bonhams, 30 September 2008, The Knightsbridge Sale, lot 262 An important rosewood and brass inlaid library table attributed to Gillows, from the period 1820-1830, features in Ibid, Vol. I, pl. 308, p. 291. This has closely comparable legs to the above and is of equivalently large proportions. Another variant to the current lot, which incorporates very similar legs, is one of a pair of rosewood pier tables attributed to Gillow and Co. also dating to the 1820s, that is pictured in Ibid, Vol. II, pl. E24, p. 359. A further related piece is a rosewood side cabinet or commode attributed to Gillows, again made during 1820-1830 but most likely with elaborate brass ‘Buhl’ inlaid panels provided by Louis Constantin Le Gaigneur, which appears in Ibid, Vol. II, pl. 544, p. 17 Height 31 inches Width 77 inches Depth 48 inches

  • Large Late Regency Six Door Mahogany Bookcase Attributed to Gillows
    Located in Lymington, Hampshire
A large and impressive late Regency six door mahogany bookcase attributed to Gillows, the upper section with a triple breakfront cornice above glazed doors with brass diamond trellis grilles, each enclosing adjustable shelves, the base with panelled cupboards decorated with book-matched flame veneers between turned columns with palmette terminals. English, circa 1815. Footnote. A double Breakfront Library Bookcase Attributed to Gillows of Lancaster, c.1820 The bookcase of large form but of elegant proportions, having a pleasing low waist, always desirable on case furniture of this sort, brass grilles, a plinth base veneered in the finest mahogany and intriguing inlaid quatrefoil shaped escutcheons to the central doors. Designed in the early 19th century “Roman” fashion, this bookcase is one of a small group of such pieces that have been linked in the past to designs provided by the Wyatt family of architects (see for example a bookcase of remarkably similar form offered by Christie’s in London on the 16th of December 2010 with an estimate of £40-£60,000). Although any link with Wyatt must remain purely speculative, the attribution of this bookcase to the firm of Gillows of Lancaster can be made with a much higher degree of confidence. This attribution is based partly on a fine suite of similar library bookcases supplied to Tatton Park and discussed in detail by Dr. Susan Stuart in Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, page 375-377, plates 443 & 444. Of even greater interest is a design for a complete...

  • Late Regency 19th Century Gillows Oak Wine Table
By Gillows of Lancaster & London
    Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A very good quality 19th century regency period oak wine table, or lamp table, attributed to gillows of lancaster, having shaped tray top with gadrooned, carved, decoration over moulded reverse tapering column with stylised lotus baluster and elegant swept tripod legs with foliate carved decoration. "Attributed To Gillows." This fine quality, charming little table follows a widely recognised design pattern which features in the Gillows Estimate Sketch Books for 16 July 1822, which refer to a "double round cornered top" and then appear again several times throughout the 1820's and 1830's. The designs are often referred to as "Flower Stands", or "Flower Tables" and there are various different itinerations to be found throuout the Regency and William IV periods. Constructed from charming, warm, rich oak veneers this little table is a great example. The carving is crisp and well executed and it retains a good colour and patina. It also remains in excellent condition and has clearly been well loved and well looked after throughout its history. The dimensions are great. Big enough to be practical and functional, but small enough to go just about anywhere around the home and serve a purpose as an antique lamp table, antique bedside table, antique wine table antique...
