About the Item

Flare Chair by Konstantin Achkov Studio Limited Edition Of 1 Piece Dimensions: D 50 x W 50 x H 86 cm. SH: 45 cm. Materials: Aluminum, plywood, epoxy resin, and stainless steel. The Flare chair is an extremely simplified structure with a base of three puzzle elements assembled without traditional fasteners. The seat and back of this chair appear as part of the structure. These features give this chair a minimalistic construction, look, and lightness. It has a unique shape with two distinctive side panels that represent broken downward-flaring triangles, hence its name. The overall shape of the chair derives from a rhombic cube, the sides of which are mentally divided by two median lines crossing in the middle. They determine the vision of the two side elements as a turning point and a contour, giving the shape dynamics. Konstantin Achkov is a leading Bulgarian sculptor. He has been developing the idea of applicability of tensegrity structures in furniture and especially in chairs for nearly twenty years. With two scientific papers in progress and international recognition for his contribution to the subject by its discoverer Kenneth Snelson and other leading scientists in the field, it can be said that tensegrity is one of the greatest themes of his life! With explicit originality in his designs not only at the structural level but also in the overall form, the tensegrity structures created by the author surprise the viewer with the scene of solid elements supported in space by a complex geometric network of tense ropes. A sense of impossible levitating elements is created! A clear view of loaded and stressed parts by pre-stressing the structure. Another characteristic of these structures is the intelligent spring system that always returns to its original shape. This allows the chairs to be flexible by responding ergonomically at the backrest or the base to the weight of the user. In this way, they become active systems moving parallel to the person sitting on them. On the other hand, the complexity of conceiving and building tensegrity has given impetus to categorize them as minimalist sculptures with levitating elements from the very beginning.
