Fred Sandra for De Coene, set of six dining chairs, model 'UP 636', walnut, faux leather, Belgium, 1960s
These elegant dining chairs are part of the Madison series designed by Fred Sandra for De Coene. These majestic chairs have a walnut frame with a beautiful visible grain. The seating in black faux leather with a small back cushion in the back. Exceptional detail how the seat floats in the walnut frame.
De Coene was founded in 1887 in Kortrijk (Belgium) by Jozef de Coene, who was at that time 13 years old. In 1895 his younger brother Adolphe joined the company. In their early years De Coene was inpired by Henry van de Velde, Art Deco and the Arts and Crafts-movement. The company made many custom-made furnishings which leads to an expansive growth. After world war one, the brother visited the United States where they became acquinted with laminated wood production, and purchased a wood-stripping machine. They were the first company that made triplex in Belgium which led to the ability to mass produce. In 1954 they received the right to produce Knoll furniture. But although the company produced on a large-scale, their were still world famous for their meticulously detailed, high-quality and Art Deco inspirerd furniture.
Kindly note that the chairs are in good, used condition. The fabric exhibits signs of use, including small damages. The wood contains scratches. Reupholstery and restoration is possible before shipping by our experienced craftspeople in our own in-house restoration atelier. With high attention for the original, they make sure every piece retains its value and is ready for the many years to come. We kindly ask you to contact our design experts for further information about the endless possibilities our restoration and upholstery atelier has to offer. Of course, a locally organized reupholstery and restoration is possible as well.

This lovely set of 18th century country house type dining chairs are a purists dream. They retain a wonderful colour and surface to the walnut timbers and have clearly been well loved and looked after throughout their lives.
Stylistically they have a slighty more formal feel to them than many sets of country dining chairs, although there is no doubt whatsoever that they retain that sought after english country furniture charm.
The seat upholstery is in reasonable condition, more than acceptable for something that we would imagine has been in place for around 50 or 60 years perhaps. There are however a few old marks, scuffs and minor stains to the upholstery, so the ease and relative inexpense of reupholstering 6 drop in seats is another added plus point.
