About the Item

Guglielmo Ulrich dining chairs for Saffa Milano, green velvet and wood, 1950, set of two These 1950 dining chairs by Guglielmo Ulrich exemplifies the structural elegance of Italian mid-century design. Crafted in solid walnut, the frame integrates a single curved back post that continues seamlessly into the rear legs. The ladder-back design features four horizontal rails with a gentle gradation in spacing, echoing architectural rhythm and proportion. The frame shows an attractive authentic patina. The seat, upholstered in olive green velvet, offers contrast to the warm wood grain and introduces a tactile depth. Fluted legs provide vertical tension and refined detailing, typical of Ulrich’s neoclassical lineage. Lateral spindles reinforce structural stability while preserving visual lightness. Ulrich, a Milanese architect and designer, worked alongside contemporaries like Gio Ponti and Paolo Buffa. While Ponti advanced modernism through rationalist geometry, Ulrich softened it with ornamental restraint and furniture scaled for intimacy. Similar attention to joinery and silhouette can be found in works by Osvaldo Borsani and Melchiorre Bega. However, Gugielmo Ulrich approaches volume delicately, tapering, never severe, remaining distinct. Guglielmo Ulrich often began his chair sketches by drafting the rear leg first, treating it not as support but as a visual anchor. This chair exemplifies that methodology, where structure becomes narrative. We accurately check the quality of every object. Our in-house expert craftsmen carefully reviewed the item.

Luisella dining chairs by Franco Albini, ed.Poggi 1955
By Poggi, Franco Albini
Located in Renens, CH
Rare suite of six “Luisella” chairs by Franco Albini for Carlo Poggi, Pavia, Italy 1955. Teak and cotton fabric. After working for some 15 years on several prototypes of the model, Italian designer, architect and urban planner Franco Albini (1905-77) completed what is considered a masterpiece: the Luisa armchair, with armrests, and Luisella, the chair without armrests. The final teak version was put into production by Carlo Poggi in 1955. The Luisa is often compared to the equally minimal and robust Leggera chair, designed by architect and designer Giò Ponti, with whom Albini apprenticed after graduating in architecture from Milan's Polytechnic University in 1929. Albini's blend of functionalism and style earned him numerous awards, including the 1955 Compasso d'Oro, a prestigious Italian prize for excellence in industrial design. (Award created by Gio Ponti in 1954). It is also in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Luisa chair, with armrests, is still produced by Cassina. The Luisella chair, without armrests, is no longer produced. The chairs has been bought by the first owner together with a Chelsea Table by Vittorio Introini for Saporiti that we have also in stock at the Galleria...
