Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a celebrated Scottish architect, designer and painter, born June 7, 1868, in Glasgow and died December 10, 1928. He is considered one of the most important exponents of the Art Nouveau movement and one of the most influential architects and designers of his time. Mackintosh studied at the Glasgow School of Art, where he met his wife, Margaret Macdonald, also an artist and designer. Together, they formed an influential group of artists known as "The Glasgow Four" or "Spook School," which also included Frances Macdonald and James Herbert McNair. Mackintosh's work is characterized by clean lines, geometric shapes, and a combination of Japanese and European influences, which made his style distinctive and innovative. He is best known for his architecture and interior design, with iconic projects such as the Glasgow School of Art, Willow Tearooms, and Hill House. His works often feature intricate and symbolic details, reflecting his interest in art and nature. Mackintosh also worked in the field of furniture design, creating iconic pieces such as the "Hill House" and "Argyle" chairs, which remain highly valued and sought after to this day. Although his work was not widely appreciated during his lifetime, Mackintosh had an enormous influence on later design and architecture, and his work is now widely celebrated and studied around the world as an example of innovation and creativity in the applied arts.

Originally a furnishing accessory for one of Mackintosh’s major design projects, Hill House in Helensburgh, near Glasgow, Scotland, from which its name derives.
