About the Item

Absolutely incredible set of 6 Iridium ballet chairs, by Jordan Mozer. These chairs were created for the Iridium restaurant in New York in 1992. Cast out of solid, recycled aluminum-magnesium alloy, and upholstered in all new boucle fabric. Looking for a statement set of dining chairs, look no further. These are the chairs that adorn Mozer's very own dining room. When it comes to unique, it doesn't get much more special than these rare beauties. The chairs have all new upholstery. The frames are structurally solid with minimal chips to the finish from age and use. Per Jordan Mozer (attached email) "The Ballet chairs were created 30 years ago for Iridium, a restaurant and jazz club across from Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, where the ballet is located. The project imagined what it might be like to accompany Clara in her Nutcracker dream, and was influenced by Goethe’s Romantic notion that “architecture is like frozen music” - we imagined that the music was so fresh (originating right across the street) that it would be entirely frozen yet – hence the liquid quality of the building/ interior / furnishings. When I was in high school I was a moderately talented springboard diver. My coach was disappointed with my ability to arch my back and point my toes, and, frustrated with my lack of discipline, he sent me to train with the girls in ballet class. The women in the class were very flexible, (backbends were tortuous for me). They wore toe shoes and leg warmers. Similarly, the chairs are arching their backs and they wear toe shoes and leg warmers. I carved wood to create the sculpture from which the chairs frames are cast in recycled aluminum-magnesium alloy here in Chicago. The frame is solid metal. The only wood in the chairs is underneath the upholstery in the seat and back cushions."
