About the Item

This is a pair of vintage Japanese side chairs crafted in the mid-Shōwa period (1940s–1960s), retaining a modern presence even after decades. The delicate iron frames are paired with lauan wood seats, embodying the refined skill of metal artisans of the time. Their simple yet well-considered form highlights the graceful curves drawn by the iron lines, giving the chairs a sculptural presence. The iron frames have developed a natural patina of rust over the years, creating a unique texture and rich depth of color. The lauan seats show a calm, understated grain, and the coolness of iron is beautifully balanced by the warmth of the wood. The slender, sophisticated construction and the aged character together emphasize a timeless elegance. Remarkably well-preserved for chairs of this era, they are suitable for everyday use as well as for serving as art pieces that bring definition to a space. Each chair stands out on its own, but together the pair creates a visual rhythm that enriches any interior. Their quiet strength within a simple silhouette resonates with the spirit of wabi-sabi, allowing them to blend naturally into contemporary settings. Weight: 3.5 kg each. ______________________________ Our Philosophy Objects always tell the truth. All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give them deep affection as much as I can. There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty. But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing today and to question us about an essence of beauty again. I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have, feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.

Pair of Armchairs by Isamu Kenmochi for Kotobuki
By Kotobuki, Isamu Kenmochi
Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba
FRP manufacturing technology was introduced to Japan from America in 1954, as exemplified by the Charles & Ray Eames chairs of the 1950s. By making it possible to create free three-dimensional curved surfaces that were impossible with conventional molded plywood, Isamu Kenmochi, Sori Yanagi, Kenzo Tange, and other designers and architects of the time created numerous FRP products together with Kotobuki, the pioneer Japanese FRP manufacturer.  The chair introduced this time is also designed by Isamu Kenmochi and released by Kotobuki. This is a vintage product from the 60's. This model can be found in the book "Kenmochi Isamu...
