Johan Rohde a Pair of Chairs with Mahogany Frames, 1900-1910

About the Item

Johan Rohde A pair of chairs with mahogany frames. Seat upholstered with embroidered wool. Performed approx. 1900–10. Mirjam Gelfer-Jørgensen writes in her ground-breaking book 'Furniture with Meaning': 'Towards a new modernism - Johan Rohde's furniture' 'No one yet dared to completely let go of the ornament, but Johan Rohde (1856-1935) is the one who most radically and talentedly prioritized the form, which became a lasting characteristic of Danish furniture art in the 20th century. However, not quite at the expense of the ornamental, almost on the contrary, because as it was minimized, its significance and value were emphasized at the same time……..the result of his efforts was of exemplary high quality, a milestone in Danish furniture art. He managed to reinterpret the time's use of classicizing forms and decorations into a strong, independent language that stands as a beacon within European furniture art.'
