About the Item
Set of six sidechairs raised on circular front legs and square curved back legs, backrest with carved pierced latticework, the intersections of which are decorated with stylised rosettes, the top rail curved backwards. All side chairs are upholstered with elegant yellow / golden paisley pattern jacquard fabric by RUBELLI.
The set of 6 Directoire side chairs with its shape "à l'Étrusque" and its characteristic backrest design is closely related to chairs made by Georges Jacob (1739-1814):
Georges Jacob was one of the most prominent Parisian chair-makers who became a maître-ebéniste in 1765. He worked for the French royalty and high nobility, e.g. for Mari-Antoinette at Versailles and especially for Monsieur, the brother of the king, who became his best client. In 1791, the guild system was abolished and Jacob diversified his workshop to include cabinet-making and mounted bronzes. Having survived the Revolution with the assistance of the painter Jacques Louis David, Jacob retired in 1796 and left his workshop to his two sons, Georges II and François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter, known as Jacob Frères. The workshop of Jacob became a supplier of furniture to the revolutionary Committee of Public Safety and subsequently to Emperor Napoleon. The works of Jacob are exhibited in the most important international museums and collections such as the Chateaus of Chantilly and Fontainebleau, The Louvre and Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, the Wallace Collection in London, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the New York Metropolitan Museum, to name a few.

Set of 8 Partially Early 19th German Biedermeier Saxe-Coburg Provenance Chairs
Located in Berlin, DE
Set of 8 partially Early 19th German Biedermeier Saxe-Coburg provenance chairs: 3 chairs with inventory stamp of Ehrenburg Palace in Coburg (soth Germany)/House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, 5 chairs hand-crafted after their model in the late 20th century:
a trapezoidal seat on four slender saber-shaped legs; curved, shovel-shaped back with carved and ebonized central motif depicting a lyre. All chairs upholstered with black horsehair fabric.
3 chairs of the set of 8 show the inventory stamp of the famous Ehrenburg Palace in Coburg / South Germany and are documented in the Ehrenburg inventory register. According to a letter from the Bayerische Verwaltung der Staatlichen Schlösser, Gärten und Seen, Munich from 1991, the chairs were sold or disposed of in the 1920s at the latest (see photo). In order to be able to use the chairs in a dining room, the former owner had added five more chairs in the late 20th century, which had been elaborately hand-crafted after the model of the three Ehrenburg Palace chairs by a German furniture maker.
Ehrenburg Palace was built and used by the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg (and Gotha from 1826 on) as a representative town residence. Duke Ernst I (reigned 1806–1844) began to remodel Ehrenburg Palace only a few years after he came to power. It was then that the building acquired its impressive neo-Gothic façade, designed by the architect Karl Friedrich von Schinkel. For the furnishing of the rooms, Duke Ernst I commissioned the French architect André-Marie Renié-Grétry. Between 1816 and 1840 the apartments were renovated in the French Empire style on the basis of his designs and filled with magnificent furniture...

By Georges Jacob
Located in Vancouver, British Columbia
A set of six period Directoire dining chairs carved in Honduras mahogany. Identical chairs are shown in the reference book "Ebenists of the 18th century". While unstamped, this set comes with written documentation and attribution to George Jacob by a leading antique dealer in Paris from where they were purchased.
Georges Jacob (6 July 1739 – 5 July 1814) the most prominent furniture maker in 18th century Paris. He produced carved, painted and gilded beds and seat furniture and upholstery work for the French royal châteaux, in the Neoclassical style that is associated with Louis XVI furniture. In his workshop he employed numerous specialist carvers and gilders. In 1785, Jacob produced the first mahogany chairs à l'anglaise, for the Comte de Provence similar in many ways to the ones on offer here.
When he retired in 1796, Georges Jacob left his workshop in the hands of his two sons, one of whom was François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter who went on to become a leading French Empire Furniture...
