Maarten Baas Where there is smoke chair, dutch design

About the Item

Since graduating from Design Academy Eindhoven with his “Smoke” series, Maarten Baas has pushed the boundaries of art, design and aesthetics. “Smoke” is an investigation into beauty and (im-)perfection. “In nature, everything is in flux, creating a certain beauty. Yet, it’s a very human tendency to keep things as they are supposed to be and keep them as they originally were. Smoke plays with both perceptions of beauty.” After the pieces are charcoaled, they are preserved in a clear epoxy resin, making them functional again. The first pieces were made in 2002 and the collection has expanded with commissions both for museums as well as private clients. In 2004, Moss gallery NY collaborated on the “Where There’s Smoke” series with a collection of design icons by Rietveld, Gaudi, Eames and Sottsass, burnt by Maarten Baas. Maarten Baas (1978) is a Dutch designer and a graduate of the famed Design Academy Eindhoven (2002). He is of the generation that followed immediately after the breakthrough 1993 landmark exhibition in Milan - Droog Design.- an assemblage of work produced by independent Dutch design studios working throughout the Netherlands. Addressing mostly ordinary domestic articles so intelligently and aesthetically re-thought and re=worked. that they reverberated throughout all of Art and Design, Maarten Baas was influenced greatly by the fresh and imaginative free-thinking which was taught at the school. Today Baas is considered one of the most influential designers working across multiple disciplines, deviating from conventional art processes while working with conventional art materials such as clay, metal, wood, and video. Baas is known for his conceptual, metaphorical, and most often amusing results which trigger the viewer to reconsider their own ambivalence toward the material world. This chair was commissioned by MOSS gallery in New York in 2004 and was offered as part of a solo exhibition called Where There's Smoke...
