Olive Wooden High Back Chairs France 1960

About the Item

A unique set of 6 high back chairs made by an unknown artist from the south of France made in the 1960s. These chairs fit all the requirements for their brutalist interpretation of the artist. Rough wooden materials, elegantly crafted into an unornamented raw finished design. The solid olive wood has of course a rough look on its own, in this design its only empowering the shape. With beautiful, exposed joints where the seat was fixed to the back. The oversized holes at the top of the back are not only an interesting aesthetic of the design, it is also practical in use. As the chairs re made of solid wood and made of heavy quality, the handle is a necessary detail in the design. They also make the chairs look less heavy and in combination with the smooth carved edges, even somewhat elegant in a brutalist way. They have similarities to some designs by Alexandre Noll for example. Olive wood seems easy to get in the south, but in these big parts it is a rare material. Especially everywhere else in Europe, or the world for that matter. It has an amazing grain to it,  striking swirl pattern which creates a different dimension. The colour is beautifully contrasting with the darker parts and flames which appear in the wood. Very nice and hard to find set of 6, priced and sold per 6 chairs.

The chairs have matt, chrome-plated spring steel feet in 3 pieces, connected with screws. The seats are made of moulded fiberglass, felt padding and cognac leather covering of the highest quality. This is for example one of the most difficult chairs to reupholster according to leather specialists, only a few people are capable of doing that in the right way.
