George Candilis chairs for Sentou France 1968

About the Item

A rare set of 6 industrial designed chairs by architect Georges Candilis (1913-1995) and manufactured by Sentou, France 1968. These chairs were part of a design by Candilis for the residence “Les Carrats” in Port Leucatein France. The Carrats holiday village, designed by architect Candilis, occupies nearly five hectares by the beach, almost at the western end of Port-Leucate. For the Candilis team, the Carrats operation becomes a place of architectural experimentation with a social dimension. Composed of cubic-shaped bungalows, its roof terraces, its patios, collective buildings, the numerous public places (small squares, play areas) allowed the creation of an ideal place where everything was done to tend towards individual and collective happiness. These minimalistic designed chairs fit the architectural holiday village perfectly. As the budget was limited, Candilis had to design smart, creating the idea of a modular useable idea into all his pieces. A simple but strong cast aluminium corner construction part allowed Candilis to mass produce that part and use it into different pieces of furniture, with the aluminium connection as centre construction piece. These chairs have solid ash feet and birch plywood seats and backs. The chairs were used many years pretty intense which gave them the beautiful patina they are in today. Some professional repairs have been made to the plywood seats and backs, preserving their originality. Since this was a beach location, Candilis added the rubber/metal feet to protect the chairs from water on the floors. A very nice and hard to find set of 6 chairs. Priced and sold per 6. Georges Candilis was born in Greece, Baku (1913-1995), the French architect Georges Candilis studied to the national Ecole Polytechnique of Athens before working, from 1946, with Le Corbusier, on the project of habitations unit of Marseille. After that Georges Candilis worked with many famous architects on several buildings, known in the world of modern architecture. At a later stage he also started to also design furniture to use in his projects. Not much was made, makes his work rare and sought after by collectors. His work can be scaled amongst the bigger names like Charlotte Perriand, le Corbusier and Jean Prouvé.
