About the Item
Reminiscent of the "Sillas Parteras" or Midwife Birthing Chairs made by Don S. Shoemaker in the 1960s, Ópera reveres the profound and dramatic journey of labor and birth — a prayer of solace offered in the form of furniture.
Each element of Ópera intricately weaves a narrative of cultural depth and resonance. The deliberate choice of She-Oak wood for its frame resonates with ancient folklore, where these trees are believed to harbor ancestral whispers within their rustling leaves. Smoothed edges tenderly acknowledge the delicate vulnerability of newborn life, juxtaposed against the sturdy resolve required for childbirth.
The plush Belgian Mohair velvet, synonymous with theater grandeur, whispers heartfelt wishes for the mother's comfort. Handcrafted tassels, borne from the skilled hands of women in Chiapas, imbue Ópera with a heritage of feminine grace, reminiscent of ceremonial adornments. Exposed screws stand as visible symbols of resilience amid the birthing journey.
Although mainly objet d'art, Ópera stands as ceremonial piece of furniture, a seat for contemplation on the human condition, the depths of gratitude, and the inherent struggles of existence—a tangible token of solace and hope in the face of life’s trials.
