Eliseo - Large Avant-garde Mexican Hardwood and Leather, Anthropomorphic Buffet
About the Item
This unique case piece is inspired by the "Apsasû" representing the female counterpart of the majestic Assyrian "Lamassu", -- imposing winged-human-bull statues renowned for their protective duty. Crafted as an exclusive spin-off edition of the "Centinelas" collection, which delves in to the themes of care, safekeeping and protection as essential human endeavors for sustaining, perpetuating and restoring our world.
Our intention was to append this collection with our own fascination for comprehending the human experience, gender roles, and our historical context. Apsasu and Lamassu, revered as protective deities, embodied the essence of all life. They would appear to stand and walk, had human heads denoting intelligence, bull bodies symbolizing strength, and wings representing freedom. These symbolic elements manifest in the distinctive winged silhouette, horned corten steel hardware, leather-clad doors, and the massive paw-like legs of this piece.
In this variant, our primary focus is on care as safekeeping -- a concept inherent in the core purpose of a cabinet piece. This expression takes the form of custody, guardianship, defense and protection, embracing historically assigned gender roles. We challenge the interpretation of the viewer by melding the aspects of the masculine and the feminine. The intimidating horned pulls on the central doors make an imposing statement, distracting from the side doors, which remain cleverly concealed with a push-to-open mechanism. The leather-covered doors further accentuate the anthropomorphic qualities, making this piece of furniture a commanding presence to experience.
