A Pair of 1950s Mid-Century Rattan Basket Chairs in the manner of Arthur Umanoff

About the Item

Step into a world of mid-century elegance with this exceptional pair of 1950s rattan wicker basket chairs, beautifully crafted in the manner of renowned designer Arthur Umanoff. These chairs are a stunning testament to the era’s aesthetic, showcasing a harmonious blend of form and function. The robust steel frame legs provide not only strength but also a sleek silhouette, ensuring stability while enhancing the chair’s modernist appeal. Complementing this structure is the graceful bamboo framework, which supports the upper section and exemplifies Umanoff’s signature organic style, inviting comfort and relaxation. The meticulous wicker basket weave in the upper section showcases artisanal craftsmanship and a keen eye for detail, making each chair a unique piece of art. Distinctive bowed arms add a touch of sophistication, reflecting Umanoff’s innovative approach to ergonomic design. A standout feature of these chairs is the diagonal steel stretcher, another typical hallmark of Umanoff’s work. This subtle yet sophisticated element underscores the originality of the design, setting these pieces apart from typical reproductions of the period. With their timeless charm and unique character, these mid-century chairs are not just furniture; they are a statement of style and a celebration of the design philosophy that defined the 1950s. Whether gracing a modern living space or a vintage-inspired nook, these chairs will undoubtedly become cherished focal points in your home. Elevate your interior with this remarkable pair of Arthur Umanoff-style rattan wicker basket chairs—where mid-century elegance meets enduring craftsmanship. Condition, in good vintage condition with a lovely warm patina, some scuff marks and small losses to the wicker but overall a pair of exceptionally original examples in very good sturdy order. About Arthur Umanoff Arthur Umanoff (1923–1985) was an influential American industrial designer, celebrated for his significant contributions to the mid-century modern movement. A graduate of New York’s prestigious Pratt Institute and the American School of Design in the early 1950s, Umanoff launched his career by collaborating with Post Modern Ltd, a New York design firm renowned for its modernist wrought iron and wood creations. Throughout the 1960s, Umanoff worked closely with the furniture manufacturer Shaver Howard, where many of his innovative furniture designs were put into production. He also crafted elegant clocks for Howard Miller, further showcasing his versatility as a designer. Umanoff believed that design should be not only beautifully constructed and functional but also attainable for the everyday consumer. His approach involved using natural materials and reimagining traditional furniture concepts, resulting in versatile designs that were celebrated for both their quality and their simplified, functional forms. Umanoff’s work reflects warmth and practicality, often featuring materials such as wrought iron, rattan, walnut, and birch. His designs are imbued with functional details while retaining a natural elegance, characterized by slender, tapered lines that embody the essence of mid-century style.
