Pair of Antique American Carved Rococo Revival Chairs in Mahogany w/ Upholstery

About the Item

An exquisite pair of very finely carved Rococo-style chairs in mahogany with elaborate rocaille embellishments throughout. The high quality and well articulated carving suggest that they are NY made and can be attributed to or were influenced by the workshop of Charles Baudouine. Charles Baudouine (June 1, 1808 – January 13, 1895 was an American cabinetmaker and interior decorator, and was the patriarch of a major family in New York society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in New York of Huguenot ancestry, Baudouine was first listed as a cabinetmaker in the New York City Directory of 1829-30, working at 508 Pearl Street. He is considered one of the most talented cabinetmakers to have worked in New York in the post-Duncan Phyfe era. Indeed, Ernest Hagen, himself a well-known cabinetmaker (who had at one time worked for Baudouine), called him "the leading cabinetmaker of New York." Much of Baudouine's work was executed in the Rococo Revival style, based on simplified Louis XV designs. Measurements: 24" wide x 24" deep x 43 1/2" high.
