About the Item

A rare pair of Garden Egg chairs in original condition, including original cloth upholstery. The Garden Egg chair was designed by the Hungarian émigré Peter Ghyczy 1968, who started his working career as chief designer for the Polyurethane factory 'Elastogran GmbH' in Lemförde (West Germany). The license to produce the chair was sold to the VEB Synthesewerk Schwarzheide. Officially, one third of their production was for the West German market, the rest for East Germany and for export. The production was halted in 1975 yet the chair became an iconic 'East' German product, due to its popularity in trade shows and exhibitions.

Rare Pair of 1950's Modern Anglo-Indian Arm Chairs
Located in Chicago, IL
These Anglo-Indian lounge chairs date to the early 1950's and were made in the Mid-Century style. During the British Colonial period and in the two decades after independence, much Indian furniture was made following British or European styles. However, these "Indian Modern" pieces were original designs and simpler and sturdier than their European counterparts. Exquisite native hardwood were used, such as Teak and Rosewood and woven rattan was substituted for upholstery, which grew musty in the humid Indian climate. Lines and details were simple. Over time, Indian craft became very sophisticated and design became more and more creative. Whether the vintage furniture...
