About the Item

Pair of George III mahogany armchairs in red damask; manner of John Linnell. The upholstered backs and seats are covered in red silk damask and joined by scrolled arms. The serpentine rails and oval backs with carved fluted detail and with attractive oval inlays; elegant turned and fluted legs headed with acanthus carving and estruscan scroll rings. Both chairs are period and obviously made in the same workshop, but the upholstered back of one of them is three-quarters of an inch different to the other both horizontally and vertically. The overall width and height of both chairs is the same. For a similar chair with the same fine carved details & undoubtedly by the same maker, see V&A collection (Victoria and Albert Museum), Museum number 1458-1904.
