About the Item

A splendid pair of Edward VII Coronation Chairs in mahogany in the Arts and Crafts taste. The chairs for the coronation were made by Thomas Glenister of High Wycombe in England. Ernest William Gimson and Ernest Barnsley are credited with the design of the chairs for this auspicious occasion. The chairs have simple triple vertical back splats with drop in rush seats with square tapering legs and finished with triple stretchers to the base. To the reverse of each seat rail is stamped with ‘E.R VII Coronation’ with the stamp of the crown also present. The chairs are accompanied with applied white metal plaques stating provenance. Each plaque reads, ” This chair was used in Westminster Abbey at the coronation of King Edward VII, 09th August 1902″. Stamped underneath the front seat rail of each chair reads ‘Glenister Maker Wycombe’. A fabulous piece of historical royal memorabilia in excellent condition and rare to find a matching pair.
