About the Item

This pair of armchairs from the “Series 186” is also known as the “Lufthavns-stole” (Airport chairs). The model was designed in 1969 for Cado Collection. The aluminium frame is without a doubt the most dominant feature of these chairs. The sturdy frame is injection-moulded and polished to resist tear and wear. The overall look, with the exposed bolts and material recalls the modern industrial style. This is softened by the padded seats and backs that are upholstered in black leather, completing the elegant, modern look. Functionality was evidently in the focus when designing the “186” series, which comprises of seven different parts that can be used in different combinations. The variety of modules enables them to fit into any space. These “Airport Chairs” are often claimed to be made by France & Son, however, in 1966 the company was sold to Poul Cadovius, thereafter known as Cado. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Reupholstered with black leather. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Dimensions: 25.39 in W x 30.90 in D x 29.72 in H; Seat Height 15.35 in 64,5 cm W x 78,5 cm D x 75,5 cm H ; Seat height 39 cm About the designer: Adrian Heath (1923-) is an architect who studied at The School of Architecture in London (1951) and was subsequently employed by Hvidt & Molgaard. Ditte Heath (1923-2004) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts School in 1948. She had subsequent appointments in London, and in 1951-58 the couple were employed by the London Council's architectural office. In 1963, they established their own design studio, and created housing and industrial design. In addition to designing furniture, between 1968-69 Adrian and Ditte Heath have taught at the School of Architecture at Aarhus in Denmark, training architects and designers. They have also written a series and articles on design. They have low numbers of furniture designs for various manufacturers such as France & Son, CADO, FDB Mobler and carpenter Soren Horn. Some of their furniture are still in production to this day under the hand of carpenter master, Niels Roth Andersen. ~H. Two Chairs by Dom Hans van der Laan, The Netherlands 1960s
By Dom Hans van der Laan
Located in Utrecht, NL
This set of chairs was originally designed by the Dutch Benedictine monk and architect, Dom Hans van der Laan for the Abbey Church of St. Benedictusberg located near the Dutch town of Vaals. These easy chairs are in an untouched condition. They are made of pine wood and feature copper nails, giving these pieces an understated, rustic look. The pair is entirely painted grey, including the nails. This specific colour was carefully selected by Whim van Hoof to resemble the original shade as closely as possible. The main focus of van der Laan’s design was functionality and rationality, which is reflected in the openings on the sides and on the backs serve the purpose of joining multiple pieces together, and lifting them. Van der Laan was a leading figure in the traditionalist movement, the Bossche School, that held these values as well. These characteristics make these chairs charming, while also being beautiful pieces of Dutch design history. Although Dom Hans van der Laan left a small body of work behind, his legacy is highly regarded in the world of architecture. The St. Benedictusberg Abbey in Vaals and its interior quickly became his masterpiece at the age of 53. This model is still found in the Dutch church named Sint Willibrorduskerk in Almelo, for which it was possibly designed for in 1964. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some small marks and scratches. Dimensions: 25.59 in W, 26.77 in D, 35.43 in H; Seat Height 15.94 in 65 cm W, 68 cm D, 90 cm H; Seat Height 40.5 cm About the designer: Dom Hans van der Laan (1904-1991) was the ninth of the eleven recorded children of Leiden architect Leo van der...
