Pair of Michel Arnoult Ouro Preto Chairs, Brazilian Midcentury, 1964

About the Item

A pair of "Ouro Preto" Chairs Manufactured by Mobília Contemporãnea The Ouro Preto chair is an important example of Michel Arnoult genius as a designer: Simple, elegant and innovative. His design offers the flexility to fit in in any type of environment. The minimalistic structure is combined with the innovative, beautiful detail of thick nylon fishing line that support the seat and backrest. Our chairs are firm and solid, the Imbúia wood is in excellent vintage condition. For the upholstery we were very fortunate to partner with acclaimed UK designer Margot Selby: Her beautiful fabric enhances the chair design. Michel Arnoult was born in Paris in 1922 and adopted Brazilian. He is recognized as one of the fathers of the Ready-To-Assemble furniture (RTA) and the flat-packaging. Michel Arnoult always defended the democratisation of design at the expense of any creative vanity. From 1952, he began designing simplified furniture, focusing his research on the RTA furniture concept. He was particularly interested in optimising production, using standard elements which are common across multiple projects. Perhaps a reference to his Architectural education, Arnoult remained faithful to a social utopia project that remained on the backnone of Brazilian design in the mid-twentieth century. Upon the new tendency of living in apartments blocks in Brazil at that time, Arnoult was interested in creating furniture pieces in dimensions that would fit in those middle class apartments. Michel Arnoult also focused on a concept that he called “hard comfort”: Well studied, good design combined with quality of manufacturing can provide comfort to wooden furniture.

Small curved chair with organic shaped ivory wood base, 'Pau Marfim'. Brazil, 1950s. The wooden frame is really eye catching; the organic shape frame is divided into three parts, with beautiful rounded edges and curves. There are some minor marks of wear and age, normal in a vintage piece, but frame is in excellent condition. The slightly angled back and seating appear to float on the frame. This chair design is very unique, and at the same time, very ergonomic: The seat and backrest provide a very comfortable seating experience. New upholstery in a light green zigzag fabric.
