Branco & Preto Buffet Bar Unit, Brazil, 1960s

About the Item

Stunning midcentury bar buffet unit by Branco & Preto, in solid and veneered Caviúna. The wood is beautiful in colour and pattern. The details are perfectly executed, as with all Branco & Preto items. Three doors in veneered caviúna, two heights of shelves inside. Ebonized inverted U frame & leg structure, a recurrent detail by Branco & Preto. As a trademark by B&P, excellent quality wood work. A very elegant piece, and a rare item. In great vintage condition. Estúdio Branco & Preto was an architecture team and furniture store, started in 1952 in São Paulo, lasting until 1970. It is one of the forerunners of interior architecture and modern-inspired furniture in Brazil. The studio was managed by architects Miguel Forte, Jacob Ruchti, Plínio Croce, Roberto Aflalo, Carlos Millan and Chinese architect Chen Y Hwa. The interest in modern architecture was a common denominator amongst these young architects who- with a sophisticated view of architecture, and realising the gap in the modern furniture market in São Paulo in the early 1950s, created a store that offered an alternative of modern taste to the elite of São Paulo. In this they sold furniture made of Brazilian materials and with impeccable finishing: something completely new at the time. The shop became a reference for architects, who would visit it to become familiar with the trends and discuss the pieces that broke with the traditional, stout lines used until then. In these ten years, the team created pieces of furniture that still inspire Brazilian designers today.
