About the Item

A gorgeous, fine and very unusual pair of carved mahogany Regency large hall chairs in wonderful condition. Attributed to world-renowned Gillows of Lancaster and likely made around 1810, this extremely impressive matching pair is understatedly elegant yet dripping with sumptuous detail and will add fabulous colour, a refined sophistication and superb quality to any interior. Made of beautiful quality mahogany with a rich ruddy hue and lovely grain patterning, they have wonderful detailing and yet are unusually designed for their substantially bordered and pierced sided backs, indented apron detailing and part reeded/part octagonally faceted front legs. The backs have a lovely billowing petal shape with slender waists and feature very unusual and standout substantial scrolled borders. Internally the backs are smooth and plain, which allows the excellent quality mahogany to speak for itself and juxtaposes beautifully with the billowing border and the unusual double-pierced sections to each side, which create a wonderful silhouette aesthetic. The seats are single piece mahogany with lovely grain, have indented borders and are set on arching splayed rear legs and very interesting aprons and forelegs. The forelegs each have lovely bordered medallions to the front and side and are joined by indented aprons, which may have originally been meant for painted or inserted embellishments. The lower forelegs are finely turned and have middle sections that are octagonally faceted as well as being reeded, which is very unusual combining both styles, although Gillows is well known for using both styles individually. It's quite possible that these were custom made by Gillows for a client who wished to combine his styles and perhaps wanted their crest or initials inserted into the apron or back, which was perhaps never completed. Whatever the origins, we love the finished result! All in all these are a fantastic looking, extremely impressive and fine pair of Regency hall chairs, which will enhance any setting with Regency splendour and wouldn't look out of place in the grandest of interiors. CONDITION These are in very good condition. Structurally sound and sturdy, they have no loose joints, were expertly constructed and built to last from quality wood. They have minor to-be-expected marks and knocks associated with their not-inconsiderable age and have a small split to the bottom of the back of one chair and a hard-to-notice historical repair to the inside of one of the legs, but overall they're a stunning and extremely rare pair in really wonderful condition and if well looked after they should be just incredible in another 200+ years - please see the photos. MEASUREMENTS Height - 91.5cm, Width - 46.5cm, Depth - 44cm, Seat Height - 43cm, Seat Width - 46.5cm, Seat Depth - 36cm, Weight per chair - 7.5kg.
