About the Item
a new wave chair.
back to the eighties – an extremely productive decade in furniture design. in the united states, postmodernism migrated from architecture to interior design; in italy, „memphis“ shocked the friends of the straightforward „form follows function“ style; in france, philippe starck became a pop star; in switzerland, trix and robert haussmann worked on their individual “teaching pieces” – and the “new german design” surprised with unusually original – and often humorous – designs. a common denominator of these currents was the frequent return to craftsmanship, as opposed to industrial series production. collaboration with smaller workshops led to limited editions, often closer to art than to furniture.
a fine example for this approach is the object chair „leda“ by german interior architect angela oedekoven. particularly impressive here is the interpenetration of two simple shapes in different materials: a right angle forms the seat and rear foot, a wave forms the backrest and front foot. first presented in 1983, leda won 1st prize in the international furniture competition at ‘interieur ‘84’ in kortrijk, belgium. further models and prototypes toured exhibitions and design magazines worldwide, vitra acquired the prototype in aluminum and the model in gray-yellow lacquer for its collection in 1987. from 1990 on it was produced by joinery and experimental workshop “cremer & cremer”, as a limited numbered edition of 150 pieces (50 realized). design galleries presented and distributed leda and it featured again in many exhibitions and museum design collections.
the characteristic shape immediately revives the 80s, visually. this makes the chair an ideal object for design aficionados – or simply for an eclectic collection of chairs around your dining table.
‘leda chair’ by angela oedekoven, designed in 1983, produced from 1990 on in a miniseries (planned: 150; realized: 50) by cremer & cremer manufacture, germany. curved element (back rest and front feet) in birch veneer, seat and back feet in lacquered wood. wears signs of use.

The hexagon has more to it than we think, and some of the aspects of this shape are still
mysterious. The series is an ode to the aesthetics that I fell in love with in a geometrical
sculptural works of art and the interesting perfect form of the historical hexagon. It's
fascinating how hexagons are part of our life but fail to realize this. It all comes down to the
element that is present throughout our body, and that is carbon.
The use of the form dates back to ancient mesopotamia...

Mazer Chair by Tom Fereday
Dimensions: W 35 x D 35 x H 55 cm
Materials: Solid Travertine.
Weight: 130 Kg.
MAZER COLLECTION:
Mazer represents a series of geometric sculptures, each a celebration of the fundamental beauty and natural variation of stone. Strict brutalist forms of the table and seating collection are juxtaposed by soft organic cutaways carving through the porous stone surfaces, revealing the natural beauty and character of travertine. Named after the medieval term ‘Mazer’ meaning bowl, the collection presents subtle organic forms proportioned for table and seating function designed for permanence. Porous formations of the stone’s structure act as an intentional disruption to the clean geometric forms of the series adding character and intrigue. The limited edition series was crafted from travertine and locally produced in Italy from a combination of machine and traditional hand made processes, each piece exhibiting its own unique characteristics and form with no one piece alike. Mazer is designed by Australian designer Tom Fereday exemplifying Fereday’s desire to honour materiality, combining form and function to produce enduring works.
Tom Fereday develops products based on the principle of honest design, conveying a design process which celebrates the materials and manufacturing processes behind furniture and products, to design from the inside out. By using the materials and environment as a positive design constraint we guide intelligent and thoughtful design outcomes which connect with people through natural materials, tactile finishes and unique design. We strive to create enduring designs which are meaningful to people and their environment.
Born in Australia, Tom Fereday grew up in England studying at the Wimbledon School of Art before moving to Sydney to complete an honours in Industrial Design at the University of Technology Sydney. Working across europe and Australia Tom Fereday went onto found his sole practice in 2012.
