About the Item

Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956) was an influential Austrian architect and designer, known for his pivotal role in the development of modern architecture and design in the early 20th century. A founding member of the Vienna Secession and later the Wiener Werkstätte, Hoffmann sought to unite art, design, and craftsmanship, rejecting historicist styles in favor of clean lines and geometric forms. Educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Otto Wagner, Hoffmann absorbed the principles of functional and rational design. His work combined elegance with simplicity, often incorporating abstract, decorative patterns. One of his most famous architectural achievements is the Stoclet Palace (1905–1911) in Brussels, a Gesamtkunstwerk (“total work of art”) that exemplifies his design philosophy. Hoffmann's designs spanned architecture, furniture, textiles, metalwork, and interiors, showing his commitment to creating harmonious living environments. He heavily influenced the Art Deco movement and the Bauhaus school through his emphasis on form, function, and craftsmanship. Though his later works were more conservative, Hoffmann's early innovations helped shape modernist design. His legacy endures in contemporary design thinking, particularly in how aesthetics and utility can coexist. Today, he is remembered as a visionary who bridged the gap between fine arts and everyday objects, redefining the role of design in modern life.

Song Armchair By Maker&Son x ALM

Located in Potts Point, NSW
Armchair by Maker&Son x ALM featuring "Japan" by Nathalie Du Pasquier & George Sowden fabric from Zigzag Zurich Studio ALM has worked on a second collab with Maker & Son. The point of departure is the armchair itself—that improbably generous piece of furniture is often called the most comfortable chair in the world. People don’t simply buy a Maker & Son chair; they keep it, they live with it, they share it. Which is why the option to renew its skin, to change the cover without changing the chair, feels like aquiet revolution. Permanence and reinvention can, in fact, coexist. The inspiration came, as before, from elsewhere: Jenny Kee...
