Rare Orange Space Age "Carousel" Sofa by Elsie Crawford for Sintoform, 1969

About the Item

The "Carousel" fiberglass sofa was designed by Elsie Crawford in 1969 for Sintoform's "Architectural Fiberglass" line. At least three sizes were made, including a 4, 6, and 8-seater unit. Although multiple colorways were offered, most of the units you'll see online are plain white. This listing, however, is for the rare example of an original condition, vibrant orange, 6-person sofa with a spacious built-in planter. Originally designed for use in shopping malls, bowling alleys, and a variety public spaces, the eye-catching space age design of these units allows them to fit a wide range of uses both indoor and outdoor. We styled this sofa as the centerpiece of a poolside patio in the photos above, but it would look just as great in a commercial lobby, museum, or arcade. The orange gel-coat on this UFO-esque seating unit is completely original. There are a couple small (smaller than a dime) sized chips to the fiberglass and a small indent on the meridian where the two halves of the shell were merged in construction. Overall a jaw-dropping spaceage piece.
