About the Item

Rare Pair of Low Chairs by Gastone Rinaldi for Rima A stylish pair of low-chairs designed by Gastone Rinaldi for RIMA. Lacquered tubular steel frame with rubber webbing and foam upholstery. The steel frame forms a cantilever back. Completely re-upholstered in Ivory Boucle wool. Gastone Rinaldi was born in Padua in 1920. In 1916 Gastone's father Mario established RIMA, a manufacturer of metal furniture and in 1948, together with his brother Giorgio, Gastone Rinaldi took over from his father in managing the business. Domus published their creations regularly and he won prizes and critical acclaim for his designs throughout the second half of the 20th Century. He worked with Gio Ponti and in 1950 he designed the chairs for the Hospital Section of the IX Milan Triennial. In 1952, he attended the XXX Milano Fair in the section curated by Alberto Rosselli, Ettore Sottsass and Marco Zanuso. The armchairs for the Piccolo theatre of Milan followed, with Zanuso. In 1954, he won the Compasso d'Oro for the chair DU30. He collaborated with Ponti, Parisi, De Carli and Gardella in the American venture Altamira. In later life he established his own business Thema, and received further nominations for the Compasso D'Oro. His productions for RIMA from the 1950s remain the most rare and highly sought after. "Office Armchair" by Pierre Jeanneret, circa 1955
By Pierre Jeanneret
Located in London, GB
Authentic 'Office Chair' from the administrative buildings of Chandigarh (Ref. PJ-SI-28-B). In excellent condition - joints have been restored and cane work replaced. Pierre Jeanneret (22 March 1896 - 4 December 1967) was a Swiss architect who collaborated with his cousin, Le Corbusier, designing furniture for Le Corbusier's vast modernist complex at Chandigarh. Jeanneret remained for over 15 years as the project’s chief architect and the city remains a masterpiece of the modern vision. The pair pioneered a new aesthetic that placed function and order over embellishment—Jeanneret’s work imbuing the strict geometry of modernism with lighter materials like cane and wood. Jeanneret also collaborated with other modern masters, Charlotte Perriand on experiments in aluminium and wood, and Jean Prouve developing prefabricated housing. Literature: Catalogue Raisonné du Mobilier: Jeanneret Chandigarh, 2019. Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, The Indian Adventure...
