About the Item

This set of 18 yellow "Omstak" stackable dining chairs was designed by Rodney Kinsman's eponymous company in London in 1971 and produced in Italy by Bieffeplast. They feature a chromed frame and seat and back in yellow-painted perforated metal. The chairs present some signs due to regular use over time, such as oxide, scratches, lack of paint, and dents. Rodney Kinsman, a renowned British furniture designer, was born in London in 1943. He attended the Central School of Art in London until 1965. In 1966, Kinsman co-founded OMK Design with Jurek Olejnik and Bryan Morrison to bring their furniture designs to life. One of their earliest creations was the iconic "F Range" chair in 1966. Made of foam plastic covered in red vinyl, the "F Range" epitomizes the stylish furniture of the 1960s and remains one of Kinsman's standout pieces. Kinsman later shifted his focus to designing furniture with a strong technical foundation that would stand the test of time. In 1971, he designed the highly successful "Omstak" chair for the Italian firm Bieffeplast. This chair features a seat and back of molded sheet steel coated with epoxy resin, with strategically placed holes to enhance its stability. In 1981, Kinsman created the innovative "Graffiti" shelving system for Bieffeplast. This unique system does not require wall or floor fastening and can be leaned against a wall. Its rubber base prevents slippage. During the 1980s, Kinsman continued to design functional and aesthetically pleasing furniture pieces, including the "Vienna" chair (1984) and the "Tokyo" chair range (1985). Collaborating with Peter Glynn-Smith in 1981, Kinsman designed the groundbreaking "Transit" seating system, intended initially for Gatwick Airport. Alongside the "Sevilla" aluminum row seating (1991) created for the Seville Expo '92 and the "Trax" chair system, the "Transit" system has become one of OMK's most successful seating solutions. It is now used in over a hundred airports and numerous other public buildings worldwide. In recognition of his contributions to industrial design, Rodney Kinsman became a Fellow of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers in 1983 and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Art in 1988.
