Scottish George III Laburnum Carver Armchair Of Generous Proportions.

About the Item

A fine and rare George III Laburnum Armchair of large proportions and of a good colour and patina. Having a well shaped top rail, a shaped and fretted splat and well shaped arms that flow perfectly. This big and bold armchair is made from Laburnum , a timber popular with Scottish furniture makers of the 18th and 19th Centuries. The wood to which they refer is not the small yellow-flowered tree found so commonly in suburban gardens throughout England, but a much larger species, Cytisus Alpinus, which thrives in Scotland and was perhaps the most highly prized amongst the more unusual cabinet- and chair-making woods. For further reading on the use of Laburnum please see the Regional Furniture Society's article from 2017. "The Laburnum Tradition in Scotland" by David Jones.
