Set of 12 'Del Rey' Dining Chairs, by Jorge Zalszupin, Brazilian Modern

About the Item

Jorge Zalszupin, a name that resonates profoundly within the world of Brazilian modernist design, has a legacy that extends beyond just beautiful furniture. Born in Poland, Zalszupin found his true calling in the vibrant landscapes and culture of Brazil, where he seamlessly wove European design principles with Brazilian sensibilities. With these dining chairs, one can see the reflection of Zalszupin's design ethos — an impeccable marriage of form and function, sophistication and simplicity. The structure of the chairs, made of rich hardwood, possibly jacarandá rosewood, showcases his penchant for materials that speak of both durability and elegance. The wood, with its polished surface and subtle grain, seems to whisper tales of Brazilian forests, a nod to the nation that Zalszupin so deeply adored. The seating, upholstered in a vibrant mustard-yellow fabric, is a testament to Zalszupin's fearless embrace of color and texture. Each weave, each thread resonates with his philosophy of combining comfort with visual allure. And it's this very audacity to juxtapose vibrant upholstery with muted wooden tones that brings the chairs to life, echoing the lively spirit of Brazilian culture. When viewed as a collective set, these chairs aren't just pieces of furniture; they are a symphony composed by Zalszupin. A symphony that harmoniously blends European minimalism with Brazilian warmth, creating an ensemble that's both timeless and compelling. In essence, these dining chairs, an embodiment of Jorge Zalszupin's visionary design, encapsulate the art of blending aesthetics with function. For those who have an appreciation for stories told through design, these chairs offer a narrative of passion, heritage, and unparalleled craftsmanship.

  • Jorge Zalszupin's Presidential Lounge Chair, Brazilian Mid-Century Modern Design
    By Jorge Zalszupin
    Located in Sao Paulo, SP
The "Presidencial" lounge lounge armchair is a true icon of Brazilian modern design, created by the legendary Polish-Brazilian architect and designer Jorge Zalszupin in the 1960s. This rare and coveted piece showcases the fusion of two cultures, with its base made of tubular steel and black lacquered metal slats, topped with Brazilian Jacaranda Rosewood veneers in an unusual bentwood design. Zalszupin's innovative use of molded laminate wood allowed him to create the curves he desired, without the need for costly manual processes. This resulted in a beautifully unique armchair, part of a series composed of a sofa and armchair, that has become a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts of Brazilian modern design. The lounge armchair's backrest is composed of profiled hardwood veneer slats, giving the piece a light and organic structure that elegantly accommodates voluminous cushions. Its "U" form seat rests on chrome-plated steel legs with tubular feet, while the armchair's rosewood-reinforced slat back adds a touch of elegance and sophistication. The Presidencial lounge chair is in very good vintage condition and has received new upholsteries in suede. Its sleek and modern design makes it a perfect addition to any space, whether in a home or office setting. While the armchair can be displayed without its original cushions, it also comes with a custom cushion for added comfort and style. Overall, the Presidencial armchair...
