About the Item

Set of 4 Bauhaus dining chairs in the style of Marcel Breuer - 1970s The Bauhaus, whose full name was Staatliches Bauhaus, was an art and design school that operated in Germany from 1919 to 1933, in the historical and cultural context of the Weimar Republic. It was based in Weimar from 1919 to 1925, in Dessau from 1925 to 1932, and in Berlin from 1932 to 1933 when it closed because it was unpopular with National Socialism. Conceived by Walter Gropius, the term Bauhaus recalled the medieval word Bauhütte, which in Italian means: shed, indicating the loggia of the masons. Heir to the pre-war avant-gardes, it was not only a school, but also represented the fundamental point of reference for all the innovation movements in the field of design and architecture linked to rationalism and functionalism, forming part of the so-called Modern Movement. Its teachers, belonging to different nationalities, were leading figures in European culture and the school's teaching experience will have a profound influence on artistic and technical teaching to this day. A crucial moment in the twentieth century debate on the relationship between technology and culture took place in the Bauhaus. Marcel Lajos Breuer was a world-renowned modernist architect and designer considered one of the most important supporters of the international style. This hungarian-born architect was a product of the famous “Bauhaus” design school in Weimar, where he underwent training in the school’s furniture manufacturing workshop.
