About the Item

A fine set of four Georgian elm dining chairs, dating from the late 18th century, George III period. Constructed in solid, well-figured elm, each chair features a yoke top rail above a pierced vasiform back splat. The seats are cut from single solid planks of elm, displaying beautiful grain. Square legs are joined by H-stretchers, ensuring strength and stability. These chairs are a good example of vernacular Chippendale-inspired country furniture, combining elegance of form with robust construction. Their colour, surface, and patina have developed naturally over more than two centuries, giving them great warmth and character. Dimensions Height: 95 cm (37.5") Width: 47.5 cm (18.75") Depth: 47 cm (18.5") Seat height: 44.5 cm (17.5") Condition The chairs are in very good original condition, structurally sound and sturdy. They retain an excellent colour and patina, with a fine wax-polished surface. There are some minor marks and blemishes consistent with age and use, along with a few small, natural age splits to the edges of a couple of seats. Light traces of old historic worm typical of elm are present, fully treated and not structurally significant. No loose joints, no significant damages or obvious repairs. The set has been sensitively cleaned and wax polished in our workshop, preserving the original surface as far as possible. They are now well-presented and ready for everyday use. As with all antique furniture, signs of wear, marks, and imperfections are to be expected and are part of their historic charm.

Set Of Six Georgian Walnut Dining Chairs
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
An Extremely Charming Set Of Six Mid 18th Century, Georgian, Chippendale Period, Solid Walnut Country House Type Dining Chairs, Having Very Attractive Pierced Splat Backs With Scrolling Top Rails Over Upholstered Drop In Seats Raised On Square Chamfered Legs And Stretchers, Retaining Exceptional Untouched Colour And Patina Throughout. This lovely set of 18th century country house type dining chairs are a purists dream. They retain a wonderful colour and surface to the walnut timbers and have clearly been well loved and looked after throughout their lives. Stylistically they have a slighty more formal feel to them than many sets of country dining chairs, although there is no doubt whatsoever that they retain that sought after english country furniture charm. The seat upholstery is in reasonable condition, more than acceptable for something that we would imagine has been in place for around 50 or 60 years perhaps. There are however a few old marks, scuffs and minor stains to the upholstery, so the ease and relative inexpense of reupholstering 6 drop in seats is another added plus point. These chairs are one of our favourite recent purchases...
