About the Item
Set of 4 wood and fabric chairs by Marcel Gascoin
This set of chairs has no defects, but it may show slight traces of use.
Marcel Gascoin is the main representative of a French design born after the Second World War, with the reconstruction of destroyed cities.
Born in Le Havre in 1907, the young Marcel followed in the footsteps of his father - workshop manager in a practical school, carpentry section - by attending the applied arts section of the École des Beaux-Arts du Havre, then the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
There he met Henri Sauvage who encouraged him to turn to modern furniture. He became a carpenter and cabinetmaker, and from then on he never ceased to adapt the container to the content, as he said himself. Recommended by Robert Mallet-Stevens in 1930, he participated in the exhibition of the Union of Modern Artists. Four years later, he participated in a competition for the design of a boat cabin, which allowed him to meet Jean Prouvé, with whom he would work. In 1938, he participated in the Salon des Arts Ménagers and created a line of storage furniture with a particular design that found an echo in Scandinavian countries.
In the aftermath of the war, his links with Raoul Dautry and Claudius Petit, ministers in charge of reconstruction, allowed him to play an important role in the production of furniture with a small footprint, by adapting the techniques proven in boat cabins. In 1947, he became commissioner of the International Exhibition of Urbanism and Housing. He coordinated the construction of model apartments (Sotteville-Lès-Rouen) and met the architect Marcel Lods.
It was also at this time that Marcel Gascoin and his collaborators saw their ideas prevail by adapting to the greatest number of people, for the mass production of apartments (model of apartment in Le Havre - Architect Auguste Perret).
Although associated with brands such as Airborne and Coméra, he still has to impose himself by creating the Aménagement rationnel de l'habitation (between 1948 and 1950) which becomes Aménagement rationnel de l'habitation et des collectivités (ARHEC) (between 1950 and 1955). In 1952, in close collaboration with René-Jean Caillette, he created the Association des Créateurs de Meubles de Série (ACMS), whose objective was to conquer a share of the mass distribution networks already in place. It was also at this time (between 1952 and 1955) that Marcel Gascoin approached the Le Havre-based company Loison, specialized in marine furniture, to develop its production range.
From 1960 onwards, although he was very present at the Salon des Arts Ménagers and remained at the forefront of mass-produced furniture, he put forward the work of his collaborators and the young designers he had trained in his workshops.
He died in 1986 in Paris.

Set of 4 oak chairs with white fabric seat by René Gabriel, 1950s
René Gabriel (1899 - 1950) is a precursor of French industrial design. He was one of the first to create, as early as the 1930s, economical mass-produced furniture combining aestheticism, robustness and sobriety, a source of inspiration for a whole generation of future designers.
A student at the Germain Pilon School and then at the National School of Decorative Arts, René Gabriel began as a domino maker by designing and producing his own wallpapers, and then made his mark as a decorative artist in most of the salons and international exhibitions of the inter-war period. In 1927, he began his research into the creation of mass-produced furniture and proposed a piece of furniture composed of juxtaposable and superposable elements. He studied an economical version that he presented in 1934 at the Salon des arts ménagers under the name of RG elements.
Another major turning point came in 1944, when the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urban Planning commissioned him to create emergency furniture. A fervent advocate of furniture for all, René Gabriel designed numerous models for disaster victims by establishing close ties with industry. He also collaborated with Auguste Perret...

Four Green Chairs 771 by Joseph André Motte, Steiner, 1958
Set of 4 chairs model 771, it is often called "the tongue chair" because of its design. It was published by Steiner in 1958. The vintage velvet of the chairs is authentic, so it may have some defects due to its age but still in very good condition.
Joseph-André Motte (1925 - 2013) was an interior architect and one of the great figures of French design in the 1950s and 1960s.
At the École des arts appliqués à l'industrie (now ENSAAMA), he studied under René Gabriel, Louis Sognot and Albert Guénot, graduating top of his class in 1948. He then obtained his first collaboration with the Bon Marché art studio. One of his first models, the Tripodes...
