About the Item

A large set of 65 dining room chairs SE 121 by architect Egon Eiermann, 1964. The chairs are made of beechwood and stained in oak. Each chair has a seat and back cushions with black faux leather. Every chair is in a very good restored condition. Egon Eiermann is regarded as one of the most influential architects of the German post-war period. In addition, he has had a lasting effect as a furniture designer until today and, as a full professor of architecture at the "TH Karlsruhe", has significantly influenced future generations. His style was determined on the one hand by his three-year collaboration with Fritz Jaenecke from 1931 as a Berlin architect. After the war in 1950 he met Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer on a study trip, and in 1956 he also met Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. On the other hand, Eiermann's style was characterized by the geometric stringency and architectural precision of modernism, in the spirit of van der Rohe. Eiermann's works were honoured in many different ways, especially in the 1960s, the heyday of his work. He was an honorary doctor of the "TU Berlin" (1965), member of the order "Pour le Merite" (1970) and was awarded the "Grand Prize of the Association of German Architects" in 1968 as well as the "Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany". In 2004, on his 100th birthday, he was honoured with the publication of a special stamp of the Federal Republic of Germany. As a furniture designer, he was particularly influential after the war and also shaped generations there. He was the first in Germany to develop series furniture on an international scale, some of which are still manufactured today, such as his table frame with slanted cross struts. His tubular steel chair SE 68 from 1950, his wicker chair E 10 from 1952 and his church chair SE 121 from 1960/61, which still stands in the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin, represent his striking designs. His wooden folding chair SE 18 is exhibited in the "Museum of Modern Art" in New York. As one of the leading heads of the "Second Modern Age", he had a great influence on German furniture design. As an architect, he remains unforgettable in many large cities - more than 30 of his buildings are listed as historical monuments. The most famous of these are the company headquarters of Neckermann Versand AG in Frankfurt am Main in 1961 and the "German Embassy in Washington D.C." in 1964. He also won the competition for the "Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church" in Berlin in 1956. Egon Fritz Wilhelm Eiermann was born on 29 September 1904 near Potsdam, graduated at the Althoff-Gymnasium and studied architecture at the "TH Berlin" with Hans Poelzig from 1923 to 1927. From 1947 he was himself a full professor of architecture at the "TH Karlsruhe" and taught there for more than 20 years with sustained success. In 2009, a street was even named after him there. Eiermann died at a young age in 1970 in Baden-Baden and was buried in the family grave in the Odenwald/Hessia.
