With humble geometry and tactile richness, this suite of six side chairs conjures the vernacular elegance of rural French craftsmanship. Each chair is defined by the quiet cadence of squared oak uprights and the rhythmic weave of natural rush, tightly spiraled and fanned across the seat and backrest in cruciform tension.
Attributed to a provincial workshop in the spirit of Charlotte Perriand and the French Reconstruction era.
Emerging from postwar austerity, these chairs reflect a return to essential forms and regional materials—a counterpoint to industrial modernism, favoring the artisanal over the manufactured. The design ethos echoes the works of Perriand’s Alpine commissions, where function met raw poetry through tactile materiality.
The solid oak frames, left raw or lightly limed, speak to a reverence for structure without adornment. Their blunt, squared legs and ladder-style bracing embrace joinery as an expressive element. The handwoven rush seating reveals subtle variation—no two chairs precisely alike—a testament to human hand and the passage of time.
