About the Item

Willem Hendrik Gispen Diagonal Armchairs for Gispen – The Netherlands, Design 1927, Production 1970s A pair of rare Diagonal Armchairs designed by Willem Hendrik Gispen, one of the Netherlands’ leading modernist designers. Originally conceived in 1927, these armrest versions were produced by Gispen in the 1970s, faithfully adhering to the innovative Bauhaus-influenced design language of the original series. These chairs are a refined extension of Gispen’s iconic Diagonal Chair, enhanced with gracefully curved chrome tubular armrests. The distinctive diagonal base structure—constructed from bent tubular steel—creates a light, floating effect while maintaining exceptional strength. The armrests are capped in black lacquered wood or Bakelite, adding a tactile contrast and visual elegance. Natural handwoven rattan wraps the seat and backrest in an intricate basket-weave pattern, bringing warmth and texture to the minimal industrial frame. This interplay of materials reflects Gispen’s mastery in merging function, form, and comfort—hallmarks of the Bauhaus design ethos. Though designed in the interwar period, this 1970s production demonstrates lasting relevance, offering a perfect balance of heritage and usability. With proportions designed for ergonomic comfort—62 cm deep, 54 cm wide, and 85 cm high with a 47 cm seat height—these chairs are ideal for both dining and office use. This set remains in very good vintage condition with light patina appropriate to age, and is a collectible example of Dutch modernist furniture. Rare to find with armrests, these chairs are an excellent addition to any design-savvy interior or collection.
