William IV Mahogany Library Armchair

About the Item

A Very Good Quality 19th Century, William IV Period, Mahogany Library Armchair Of Good Bold Proportions, Having Upholstered Scrolling Back And Arms With Moulded Decoration, Over Generously Proportioned Seat, Raised On Faceted Turned Front Legs And Incredible Stretched Sabre Legs To Back. This chair dates to the late 1830's and is typical in design with regards to the elegant scrolling features and the turned legs. An exceptionally unusual feature however is the kicked, or stretched, legs to the back which really add something to the elegance and presence of the chair. It is also of bold, generous proportions and comfortable to sit in for any person of any shape or size. It can definitely be described as a comfortable chair to sit in. Perfect for a whole variety of spaces around both the home and office this chair would really stand out, whilst at the same time offering a more than comfortable place to sit for whatever period of time is desired. Overall the condition is excellent with a few very minor old repairs and restorations which are to be expected on a functional piece of furniture of this age and overall the description can certainly be described as good. As with all items which we offer for sale the chair has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled antique furniture restorers, where it has simply been cleaned and naturally wax polished in the traditional fashion. It is also worth noting that the upholstery has been recently carried out and therefore both the fabric covering and inner linings are all in excellent condition. Circa 1835. Height 42in. Width 26in. Depth 36in. Seat Height 18.5in. An Exceptional Quality Pair Of Early 19th Century, Regency Period, Mahogany Carver Armchairs, Of Good Bold Size, Having Well Figured Top Rails With Exceptional Carved Decoration, The Downswept Scrolling Arms Over Upholstered Drop In Seats, Raised On Elegant Bold Sabre Legs. There are a few different theories as to where the term carver chair originates, but we rather like the simple one of a carver chair always being at the head and foot of the table and therefore occupied by the carver of the meat. Whichever way you look at it carver chairs are normally bolder, slightly larger and generally just more impressive than a normal dining chair. Of course these days carver chairs can be used be used in many places around the home, as desk chairs, bedroom chairs or even spare hall chairs, as opposed to just being used around the dining table. This pair of regency carver chairs...

Antique 1830 William IV Flamed Hardwood Metamorphic Library Armchair Steps
By Gillows of Lancaster & London
Located in West Sussex, Pulborough
We are delighted to offer for sale this large and collectable lightly restored William IV circa 1830 Flamed Mahogany, metamorphic armchair which converts into Library steps attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and London. This is a wonderful piece of English history, I have never seen another with such elegant turned front legs, usually they are plainer and straight timber. The seat pad has been upholstered with a grey linen, the steps and raw flamed mahogany and look amazing. This chair is an important and extremely expensive looking thing that commands attention in any setting. You can see the same model made by Gillows currently viewed in the Victorian & Albert Museum, below is an extra from their listing. The period 1800-1825 was a great one for ‘patent’ or ‘metamorphic’ furniture This chair, which transforms into a short set of steps for use with bookshelves, is close to a design for a ‘Library Chair’ published in Rudolph Ackermann’s Repository of the Arts in July 1811, which was made by the London firm of Morgan and Saunders, of Catherine Street, Strand. They were well known for their ingenious furniture, including reading chairs with writing surfaces attached and a great variety of travelling beds...
