About the Item

"Where There's Smoke..." is a continuing narrative told through one-of-a-kind pieces created by Dutch designer Maarten Baas for Moss, in which iconic furniture pieces are systematically and carefully burned. Wielding a torch, Baas re-sculpted this iconic chair with flame, careful to maintain and preserve the structural integrity and functionality. As Baas says, "Instead of keeping a piece of furniture as it was, or trying to restore it to its original state, I burnt it. The shapes and asymmetry were altered and the surface carbonized. I took care that the chair, is still a chair, and in my opinion no uglier for its treatment. This new beauty was finished with a transparent epoxy resin to make it useful again. In a way it was a sacrifice to enter a new chapter". Originally designed by Gerrit Rietveld, 1934, for the Schröder-Schräder House, the Netherlands. Manufactured in cherry by Cassina, Italy. Edition of 25 produced for Moss, although each are unique. Metal Tag on bottom of seat 23/25. (Image Below). BAAS in metal letters on back at bottom. In original crate. Named Designer of the Year at Design Miami 2009, Maarten Baas has emerged as a major new talent. His work is included in the permanent collections of several museums, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Groninger Museum and the Stedlijk Museum in the Netherlands, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and SFMOMA.
