About the Item

Set of bespoke Club Chairs by Boris Broschardt for Kabarett Niedermair, Vienna, 2008 4 chairs available in total, 4 additional cushions available upon request. Commissioned for the interior of the "Salon der Freiheit" at Kabarett Niedermair in Vienna. Layered wood, stained, cut and steam-bent, upholstered seat cushions with fabric cover, light signs of wear. The design was a commissioned work by Nadja Niedermair for the "Salon der Freiheit", a club space located above the Kabarett Niedermair. The furniture was used exclusively in this setting. The complete interior consisted of six benches, eight tables, and 19 chairs, in use until 2014. – Boris Broschardt was a part of the renowed "Gruppe B.R.A.N.D." in the early 1980s, where many—especially young—designers saw themselves in total opposition to the industry. Serial production as such, and with it the traditional conditions of design, were strongly called into question. The response was the creation of one-of-a-kind pieces or small series, handmade and distributed through gallery operations. “Gallery design” became one of the key terms used to describe this trend. The Austrian group B.R.A.N.D. is considered the most prominent representative of this now historical design movement. Active from 1983 to 1992, the collective worked precisely at the contested boundaries between art and design, powerfully illustrating the discourse of that time through their work. The rise and fall of the “Brands” also reflects the spirit of life in 1980s Vienna and represents an exciting chapter in Austria’s design history.
