20th Century Black American Plycraft Set of Four Dining Chairs by Norman Cherner

A black, vintage Mid-Century Modern America set of four Pretzel dining chairs made of hand crafted polyurethane foam, designed by Norman Cherner and produced by Plycraft, in good condition. The seat backrest of the armchairs, side chairs are slightly arched with sculptural arms, standing on four curved legs. Labeled on the backside on one of the chairs. Wear consistent with age and use. Circa 1950 - 1970, United States. Seat: 17.25" H x 20" W x 22" D Norman Cherner was an American furniture designer born in 1920, in Brooklyn, New York, United States and passed away in 1987. Cherner studied and taught at the Columbia University of Fine Arts Department in New York City. In his early days of his career, he explored and researched the Bauhaus movement, to develop a low-cost design for pre-fabricated housing and affordable furniture. Cherner is best known for the chairs made of hand crafted molded Plywood, which he created, designed for the American manufacturer, Plycraft. Plycraft was an American furniture manufacture founded in the United States. The company history remains lost in history.

A light-brown, vintage Mid-Century Modern Danish set of three Wishbone chairs made of hand carved Oakwood, designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Carl Hansen & Søn, in good condition. The Scandinavian Y-shaped, armchairs have a curved slim backrest with arched arms, supported by four rounded wooden legs. At least hundred steps are required to design, produced each side chair. The seat cover is made of original hand woven paper rope. Refurbished and hand polished. Wear consistent with age and use. Circa 1950 - 1960, Denmark, Scandinavia. Measures: seat: 18.5" H x 19" W x 19.5" D Hans Jorgensen Wegner was born in 1914 Tonder, Denmark and passed away in 2007 Denmark. He was a world-renowned Danish furniture designer. Wegen finished his apprenticeship at 17, he developed his skills from the master cabinetmaker H.F. Stahlberg. In 1951, Wegen received major design prizes, from the Lunning prize and the Grand Prix of the Milan Triennale.
