About the Item

Developed in 1958 by Norman Cherner for Plycraft, cemented in history as one the most dramatic and iconic chairs of American Mid Century Modern design. The Avant Garde design was accomplished using laminated layers of plywood covered with a walnut veneer. Dainty in appearance with a surprisingly astute structural strength. This remarkable chair is featured in the collections of design institute’s across the globe including the Vitra Design Museum in Germany. A terrific chance to own a piece of design history for an affordable price.

    Refinished. Minor losses. This stunning set of chairs, save for the original vinyl upholstery, received a complete restoration. The wood has been refinished and brought back to it's original luster showing only a few veneer repairs (which can be seen in the photos provided).

The Cherner side chair utilizes a molded plywood seat with a unique construction of laminated walnut plywood in graduated thickness. The seats and backs are designed using a single shell connected by a slim and sturdy neck upholstered in new black vinyl nearly identical to the original material all set atop a set of slender, powder-coated metal legs.
