Antique "Roundabout" Corner Chair with Leather Seat, circa 1760

About the Item

An absolutely gorgeous piece preserved in original condition, this corner “roundabout” chair has been clearly cherished for generations. Retaining a glowing early surface with deep oxidization under wax, the surface is silky and smooth from two centuries of rubbing and gentle wear. The walnut crest rail is crafted in three parts, the thick carved center affixed over the arms to create a comfortable back support. The pierced splat tenons into the crest rail and the shoe, this being integral with the frame of the chair. All three turned balusters are a single piece of walnut from the crest rail through the bottom of the leg, transitioning from the turning of the upper half into the marlborough lower half with a chamfered inner edge. Scratch beading highlights the front edge of the apron and follows the length of all legs along their outermost corner. A single wooden peg locks together each tenon mortise corner joint of the apron, an additional peg having been added to the right side of the front leg for strength at some point. The slip seat retains a distressed and quite early leather seat, the very thick leather remaining in excellent condition. It will continue to be enjoyable for many years to come if well cared for. The slip seat frame is almost certainly original, crafted with tenon mortised joints of what appears to be white oak (not micro-analyzed) with horsehair stuffing. The X-stretcher firmly locks all four legs in place, the chair remaining very sturdy and stabile. Chairs of this quality of surface and form, preserved in this outstanding condition, are infrequently found on the open market. They are gorgeous statement pieces for the Classic home and will certainly be a cherished part of any collection. Measurements: 22 3/8” W from arm to arm: 24 1/8” D x 24 1/8” W (square) x 31 3/8” H: 18 1/4” H to seat Condition report: Early finish with gorgeous patina under wax. One corner block replaced (front center). Old crack in crest rail. One extra peg in front leg. Wooden brace added beneath stretcher, old break in stretcher repaired. Leather is early but not original (19th century), original slip seat frame with horsehair stuffing. Sturdy and strong in all joints.
