Jean Prouvé JP-SCAL-450 Daybed / Authentic Mid-Century Modern

About the Item

This item expresses a specific rawness. There is no need for precise execution or the desire to appear sophisticated. It is simple, self-evident, and direct. It is made out of basic elements, illustrating a new language: essential and cleared of everything irrelevant. Made out of enamelled steel and upholstery, the piece is rigid. Its clean shape presents a rather humble geometry. Cylindrical legs form a single sturdy construction together with the frame which is sharp. Here the metal is rich in surface and reveals a wonderful patina. To keep the value of the item and its authenticity, the finish wasn’t overpainted, while the character of the surface was preserved in its original condition. Its surface is slightly waxed with beeswax, which protects it while presenting a natural, subtle gloss. The piece is produced by Ateliers Jean Prouvé, for Cité Cansado, a town in north-western Mauritania, built for the iron ore mining company MIFERMA. The upholstery is redone in a traditional way. As foam was used for the original seat, we upholstered it accordingly, in black fabric. The piece has the original frame with wires under the seat, which can be removed and replaced with wood planks, which we recommend. If you are a collector, we recommend keeping it in its original condition. I think this piece blends well with many styles in interior. As a daybed, I see it as an uncompromising piece in each interior. P! Galerie’s selection is mainly focused on rare French mid-century modern design artefacts by Pierre Jeanneret, Jean Prouvé, Le Corbusier, and Charlotte Perriand. Artefacts from our carefully curated collection are handpicked, and all traces and important indicators of authenticity are evaluated professionally. We try to preserve as much of patina as possible during the process of restoration, as it defines these historic pieces. Each object comes with a certificate of authenticity, offering you the opportunity to own a valuable artefact originating from a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site. Not only do we cooperate with museums and offer auction houses our services and expert opinion, we also look forward to welcoming you as a private collector and connoisseur. Miguel Fisac Toro Armchair / Authentic Mid-Century Modern
By Miguel Fisac
Located in Zürich, CH
Sculptural qualities define this object. A vivid dynamic between the different volumes and surfaces, showing different qualities from different angles. Its expressive form offers a complex plasticity shaped by light and shadows. Name Toro comes out from the shape of its backrest, which is shaped in an expressive manner, so to resemble horns of an ox, where the extensions serve the function of armrests. Unlike the seat, which complements the wooden frame with its shape, the backrest appears more autonomous. The seat is shaped so the back part is thinner than the front one, which allows the user to be absorbed and firmly seated within its backseat. The frame presents bars with curved surfaces, which improve the sculptural character of the piece. It is done in massive oak wood. All parts are authentic, including the upholstery which is done in firm red vintage leather. The chair is in its original condition and has softly been restored. I think this piece blends well with many interior styles. It can support pure, modern aesthetics by giving them a warmer character with its natural materials and expressive colour. As an armchair with a strong character, it is a powerful addition to your living space. P! Galerie’s selection is mainly focused on design masterpieces between 1918 and 1970. Apart from rare French mid-century modern design artefacts by Pierre Jeanneret, Jean Prouvé, Le Corbusier, and Charlotte Perriand, our offer includes masterpieces of historic importance and value by Gerrit Rietveld, Lina Bo Bardi, Marcel Breuer, Oscar Niemeyer, or, for example, Eileen Gray. Following all ethical and juridical requirements, all items from our carefully curated collection come with a certificate of authenticity. We try to preserve as much of patina as possible during the process of restoration, as it defines these historic pieces. Not only do we cooperate with museums and offer auction houses our services and expert opinion, we also look forward to welcoming you as a private collector and connoisseur.
