About the Item

1940s set of six original French Multipl’s armchairs. Designed by Joseph Mathieu and made in Pierre Benite in Lyon. Multipl’s chairs are an iconic part of industrial French history and this is the first time we have seen the armchairs. The chairs are in exceptional structural condition for their age, with original feet and hand welded sheet metal throughout. The chairs were probably painted red originally and have been overpainted in white several times. The exaggerated and graceful arms give the chairs great rigidity and are sculptural presence. Multipl’s was, in its day the competitor to Tolix, although sadly Multipl’s did not survive. Examples of Multipl’s arm chairs are becoming increasingly rare. Measure: Seat height 46cm. Workshop report Our workshop team inspect every product and carry out any needed repairs to ensure that everything leaves us serviced and maintained ready for many more years of life. All of our vintage products show the rich beauty and history of their life with the knocks and bumps of many years of use and we try to minimize restoration to keep every piece as original as possible.
