About the Item

1970s Boucle bentwood dining chairs by Paul Epp - Set of 6 Bentwood dining chairs manufactured in Toronto by Ambient Systems, designed by Paul Epp. The Nexus chair, a limited edition design and an incredibly rare find. We cannot find any of Paul Epp’s designs currently available for sale. The entire frame is cut and molded from the same blank of plywood to achieve their form. The seat and back share the same radius. Paul Epp’s biggest objective was to consider how the chairs looked side by side and from the back, which is how we typically see chairs when they are around a table- thoughtfully designed for interior excellence. Paul Epp designed these chairs in the 1970s, shortly after returning to Canada, from studying in Sweden. His Nordic influence is obvious in these designs. Similar design ideas can be found in the portfolio of Tobia & Scarpa, who designed/produced the Africa Chair This chair is iconic, rich in thoughtful design and perfect for any interior space. Each armless dining chair is accented with aged brass orbs, raising the seat above the chairs frame. Set of 6. 1 chair with armrests, 5 without. When asked about the influence of 20th century Scandinavian design in his work, he says: “Scandinavia developed a great lexicon of how to use wood in a way which I had been unaware of and I was immediately taken by it.” Since those early days, Epp has been a professional designer in many capacities: furniture, products, exhibits, interiors, marine, graphics, sculpture, plus production, one-of-a-kind manufacturing and as a teacher. He’s also worked as a craftsman. When asked if he has a preference, he says: “They’re similar but not the same thing. Condition:
Reupholstered. Wear consistent with age and use. 7.75/10 Condition. Newly upholstered in a white bouclé fabric. Frames are sturdy, strong, balanced. Light wear to the wood throughout- all cosmetic- such as light surface level scratches, small dings, a couple minor chips- photos for reference.
