About the Item

This is a superb and rare antique Victorian solid walnut set of sixteen chairs, circa 1880 in date. They bears the impressed mark of the renowned maker Thomas Turner of Manchester. This fabulous set of sixteen antique Victorian chairs have been made from hand carved solid walnut, feature elegantly carved top rails with fluted stiles above overstuffed seats, and they are raised on turned baluster supports joined by an H stretcher. They have been expertly reupholstered in top quality Scottish cow hide which has been hand dyed and antiqued. The elegant brass studding was achieved with close individual studs not by using strips, and each stud was individually hammered in by hand. It is a fabulous set which would look very grand in any dining or board room. Condition: This set is in really excellent condition having been beautifully restored and reupholstered in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 108 x Width 51 x Depth 58 - Chair Dimensions in inches: Height 3 feet, 6 inches x Width 1 foot, 8 inches x Depth 1 foot, 11 inches - Chair Thomas Turner Thomas Turner was a 19th Century master cabinet maker based in Manchester. He also manufactured the modular bookcase system in London and Manchester as the renowned "Globe-Wernecke" Company Limited. The brand was, through an active export policy, global, and his bookcases certainly enriched the lives of Empire Administrators and scholars the world over Walnut The Walnut woods are probably the most recognisable and popular of all the exotic woods, having been used in furniture making for many centuries. Walnut veneer was highly priced and the cost would reflect the ‘fanciness’ of the veneer – the more decorative, then the more expensive and desirable. Our reference: 06184b
