Art Deco Dining Room Armchair by Michael Rachlis for Deutsche Werkstätten Heller
About the Item
This remarkable Art Deco dining room armchair, designed by Michael Rachlis for Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau, exemplifies the luxurious and functional design synonymous with the era. Created during Rachlis’s tenure at the renowned German furniture workshop in the late 1920s and early 1930s, this armchair was part of a custom-designed dining room for the prominent Berlin politician Johann Baptist Gradl. The full ensemble, commissioned around 1930, included a retractable dining table and striking sideboards veneered in rosewood and zebrawood, reflecting the exceptional quality of the era’s craftsmanship.
The armchair's solid hardwood frame is veneered with zebrawood, lending it a unique, elegant look, while its straight square legs and armrests further showcase this exotic material. The seat is constructed with nosag springs, offering superior comfort, while the backrest features a belted upholstery structure. Both the seat and backrest are filled with a blend of hessian, palm fiber, cotton wool, and nettle, ensuring a luxurious seating experience.
Cloaked in a striking petrol-colored cotton velour fabric, this armchair exudes sophistication and is adorned with fine details, including a delicate finish that enhances its timeless appeal. This extraordinary piece is not just a chair, but a testament to the Art Deco movement’s ability to combine beauty with function, making it a perfect standout in any interior.
