About the Item
Claudio Salocchi “Napoleone” dining chair for Sormani, cognac leather and wood, Italy, 1972, set of two
This captivating “Napoleone” chair, designed in 1972 by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani, exemplifies the designer’s pursuit of balance between expressive form and functional clarity. Departing from conventional typologies, the chair rests on a bold architectural base: rather than four legs, a single central support emerges from a blunt, angular structure, rising to meet the seat through a crisp rectangular plane. The backrest—triangular in form—introduces a subtle curve, softening the composition with unexpected grace.
Crafted in polished black lacquered wood, the chair exudes a sense of sculptural precision and modern strength. It encapsulates Salocchi’s vision of design as an intellectual and spatial discipline, where radical aesthetics and ergonomic function coexist seamlessly.
