Colombo Sanguineti Chiavarine dining chairs, wood and straw, Italy, 1948, set of two.
Colombo Sanguineti, historical artisan and manufacturer of "Chiavarine" chairs, designed and produced this unique set of ten in 1948. Sanguineti, who had his own laboratory in Chiavari, Liguria, conceived these ladder-back dining chairs, blending modernist simplicity with neoclassical elements and meticulous attention to detail and proportion. Sanguineti is, in fact, a great representative of the Italian school of wood craftsmanship of the 1940s and the 1950s, together with the masters Paolo Buffa, Vittorio Dassi, Gio Ponti, Pierluigi Giordani, and more. These sculptural chairs represent the refined elegance typical of Mid-century Italian design. The chairs feature a distinctive "ladder" backrest, with dark brown stained wood that reveals its natural grain, highlighting the craftsmanship. The slender fluted legs are reinforced by rounded stretchers, creating a delicate yet sturdy structure. The seats, original of the age and restored by our in-house atelier, are made of traditional natural straw weaving in a natural color, offering a tactile contrast to the polished wooden frame. This style, often referred to as "Chiavarine," has been adopted by many renowned artists, becoming a hallmark of elegance and craftsmanship in modernist furniture design.
