Eight Ladderback Dining Chairs with Rush Seats, Europe late 20th century

About the Item

Over the 20th century, European designers fused traditional crafting techniques and styles with modern materials, design, and industry. The ladder-back chair was one of the most popular chairs of its time. Today, classic ladder-back chairs and their more modern reiterations are desirable, collectible pieces thanks to their distinctive look, quality, and history. This European modern dining set for eight is impressive in its organic simplicity. This set carries with it the same beloved modernist characteristics applied to American, Scandinavian, and Italian mid-century design – simple, functional – and shows the impeccable craftsmanship that united much of Europe’s best mid-century modern seating creations. Accordingly, this rustic set was born from a desire to create a design that was comfortable, organic, and cosy in its simplicity. The design of each chair incorporates subtle, yet stunning decorative elements on a base that European mid-century designers liked to call “honest design”. The set’s aesthetic is defined by the high ladder backrest with four horizontal slats with a “hill” shape with a rounded top. This structure creates an airy and rhythmic look that is further complemented by the legs’ sculpted double box stretchers. The overall design of these chairs is reminiscent of the Shaker style, specifically the so-called shawl rail chair. Based upon ascetic principles, Shaker furniture is recognized by clean, smooth lines, simplicity of design, high quality and excellent joinery. The unique European modern design element is the use of rush on the seats with expert weaving, that pairs beautifully with the solid wood bodies and tapered legs, and gives this set a rustic and organic look. Each of these dining chairs was created by exceptionally skilled European craftsmen who made sure these chairs are durable, sturdy, and functional, while their expert craftsmanship and use of high-quality wood and rush make each piece a beautiful design heirloom piece. • Late 20th Century Anglo-Chinese Chairs with Caned Seats, Europe 1980s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
The influence of Chinese design on the West has been subtle, almost by osmosis, but we can see references in much of western art and design. Much of Europe has long had a magpie tradition of taking from the different cultures it has come into contact with in its past, furniture being no exception. Similar to European Chinoiseries, Britain formulated an Anglo-Chinese style that copied Chinese models yet adhered to British fashions affecting furniture design. The resulting aesthetic is quite unique and has evolved much in the past decades as demonstrated by these armchairs. These solid, exotic wood chairs...
